Self-Belief in Business: Why Your Strategy Only Works as Well as You Believe in You
You've followed every expert's playbook and your business still hasn't taken off. Here's the belief work strategy can't replace, and how to bring it back.
It's 9:40 on a Tuesday night and you're on the couch with your laptop balanced on a throw pillow, watching the replay of yet another training from yet another expert, and your notebook already has three different funnel diagrams in it from the last three experts you trusted. You've done the work. You've done all of it, honestly, the course and the content calendar and the scripts you were told to use in your DMs even though they never quite sounded like you, and somewhere between the replay and the notebook a question you don't want to say out loud keeps creeping in... when is this thing actually going to take off?
I want to offer you a different answer than the one you've been searching for, and it has a lot less to do with your funnel than you'd think.
The practice that's easiest to skip
Here's what nobody warns you about when you start investing in strategy. The more tactics you learn, the easier it gets to quietly let your belief practices slide, because belief work doesn't feel tangible. It's not a new offer or a new funnel or a new way of doing the work, so it's the first thing to get bumped when your calendar fills up and your to-do list is screaming.
I know this because I did it. Over the last couple of years I went deep into strategy inside my business, and some of that work was huge and genuinely profound. But somewhere along the way I started seeing strategy as the answer, and the belief practices that had carried me for years got set down one by one without me even noticing. That wasn't all that helpful inside my business, and if you're feeling stuck in a loop of doing everything right and still waiting, there's a good chance some of your belief work has been neglected too, or maybe you've never really been shown what belief work even looks like day to day.
What a surprise heartbeat taught me
The sentence that changed all of this for me showed up in a doctor's office.
Several years ago, my husband and I had two pregnancies that weren't viable. Positive tests, and then no heartbeat, no pregnancy that was ever going to continue. So when I found out I was pregnant with what would become baby number three, I walked into that first ultrasound already braced for the same news, and when the tech said, so casually, that the little flutter on the screen was a heartbeat, my lips literally started to tingle. I was shocked, and the fact that I was so shocked told me just how used to bracing I'd gotten.
While I was processing that news, one thought landed so clearly it felt like a light switching on: the only option is to believe. I wanted to receive this baby without the fear and trepidation I'd carried through the pregnancies before, and the moment I saw that, I also saw that this was exactly the work in front of me in my business, too. I'd been building a business strong enough to hold another child for two years, and the strategy was in place. Now the real work was to step into belief.
Strategy is only as good as the woman executing it
Strategy is amazing. I'm not here to tell you to throw out your plans. But a strategy is only as good as the person who believes in herself enough to run it, and the true success of a business comes from who is executing the plan. Is it the woman who trusts herself, or the woman constantly deferring to what some expert said, even when it doesn't feel authentic to her down to her bones?
When you have deep belief in yourself, something shifts in how you show up. You stop worrying about saying the wrong thing to the wrong person, because you understand that you can only say the right thing to the right people. The words that come out of you, in your content, in your DMs, on your sales calls, carry a kind of certainty that no script can manufacture, and the people who are meant to work with you can feel it.
When belief comes back, your authenticity comes back online
Over the last six to eight months I've resumed my belief practices and let them run side by side with my strategy work, and the clearest result is that my authenticity has come back online. I can feel it in my marketing, in my content, and in how I'm making decisions.
It's also why I'm doing my podcast differently now. I'm releasing short Kellyisms episodes in real time instead of polishing every episode into something perfect, and the very first one was partly recorded in the school pickup line. The kids got in the car, the audio changed, and instead of starting over I just kept going. A year ago that would have felt like a mistake. Now it feels like proof that when you believe in your message, you can't deliver it the wrong way.
Fix your eyes on what's already working
Here's the part I didn't expect: belief is also a whole lot more fun. When you lend your thoughts to the idea that this is working and it's going to work out, you start fixing your eyes on all the ways it already is working, the client who renewed, the DM that turned into a real conversation, the email that got three replies. And when you look for momentum, you see the momentum that's already right in front of you, which inevitably creates more.
The alternative is exhausting. Anything other than belief ends with you putting someone else's strategy above your own, putting other people on a pedestal above yourself, and chasing something that doesn't exist.
If you're ready to go deeper on this, INEVITABLE is my two-week coaching experience where I teach the belief practices I actually use: the three I do daily, the two I lean into once a week, and the one I do monthly. It's three live workshops, eleven days of audio drops, and a live celebration call at the end, because when you do this work, you are going to have receipts. Your replay access is lifelong, so you can join whenever you find this.
The woman you're becoming
Picture yourself a few weeks from now, opening your laptop and seeing your business for what it already is instead of everything it isn't yet. You're saying what you actually think in your content. You're running your business your way. You know what you have to say matters, and you trust that it's going to get the right people to the table.
That woman is already in there, meant to shine and meant to step out into the world, and she's so much easier to bring to the surface when you practice believing in her every single day.
The only option is to believe.
